We have been extracting dolomite rock through underground mining for many decades. We backfill the resulting voids with mineral-based substitute building materials and, as a specialist recycling company, make an important contribution to the circular economy.
MaterialsRecycling of mineral materials
To backfill the resulting voids, materials of mineral origin that have been approved and authorised by the mining authorities and are highly environmentally compatible are used.
The use of backfill material is subject to strict conditions. The material requirements are regulated by the Backfill Ordinance. Furthermore, the Technical Rules define the requirements for backfill material in terms of environmental protection, health and safety, as well as quality assurance.
The backfill materials are transported in an environmentally friendly manner by ship via the Moselle or by lorry as bulk material and packed in big bags.
The placement of these materials fulfils important functions, such as improving the stability of the rock mass, reducing rock movements and rock-related damage, as well as improving drainage.

Quality controlStrict rules ensure quality
It is our responsibility to use only backfill materials that have been approved and authorised by the relevant authorities. We ensure this through a continuous system of checks and monitoring.
To ensure comprehensive quality control of non-mountain backfill materials, we have developed a system comprising both internal and external checks that complies with the current Backfill Regulation as well as the Technical Rules. Installation only takes place after the material has been rigorously tested to ensure it meets the required properties.
1. Internal monitoring
The delivered material is first subjected to an incoming inspection. During this process, we check the delivery documents and compare the material’s appearance, consistency and odour with the details in the declaration. We then take retention samples, record them and carry out identification analyses at regular intervals. Every delivery is precisely documented. The material type, quality and quantity, as well as the daily installation locations, are recorded.
2. External monitoring
In addition to our comprehensive internal monitoring measures, the installed materials are subject to ongoing inspection by accredited laboratories, certified external inspectors and the relevant authority.
